Arnold Allen (-350) vs Gilbert Melendez (+265)
Arnold Allen (14-1) could be one of the best fighters you have not seen before and the odds suggest oddsmakers are taking him against Gilbert Melendez (22-7). Allen tends to fly under the radar a bit as he’s only fought once per year because 2014, but when he does struggle, fans are in for a treat.
Allen is someone who lets his game do the talking and he does not tend to be a personality pre- or post-fight, that may hurt when it comes to marketing. He is making an attempt to be active as this is his second battle in 2019. He comes into this bout undefeated at the UFC with a 5-0 record with two functionality of the night awards to his credit.
Gilbert Melendez, 12 years older than the upstart Allen, has been through wars with nearly everyone in the UFC. Melendez has no issue diminished, entering the struggle on a series. It is not a fantastic sign when a fighter needs to step away from the game to locate their love for it . Following his final fight, he did just that, but I have very real questions about the motivation of Melendez, that has not won since 2013.
This is going to be the biggest battle of Allen’s career and when he’s got a nice showing, it should vault him to the top 15, eventually. He is very well versed and has shown an ability to adapt to the struggle in front of him.
Interestingly, he has given away a number of his strategy , stating:”I am prepared for anything, I have had all sorts of fights. I have been in dull fights where nobody will get hit and you wind up winning without getting touched, and I have had fights where I’ve been in small brawls, type of grinding fights, so I will be ready for whatever he brings. I am just planning to outpoint himoutskill him, and going to be somewhat better than him at the night.”
I concur, and Allen must point-fight his way to a decision victory, but he needs to not give in to Melendez, who’ll want a kill-or-be-killed firefight.
